1. Does the police department respond to accidents on private property?

The police department does not investigate crashes on private property, such as parking lots, unless certain circumstances exist. A police officer will respond and conduct an investigation on private property when any of the following circumstances exist:

• There is an injury to anyone involved in the crash.
  
• Any driver is under the influence.
  
• The crash is a hit-and-run.
  
• Any driver does not possess proof of valid insurance.
  
• A reckless driving offense occurred.

If you have an accident on private property, download and complete the Private Property Accident Information Exchange Form. This form is intended to help you obtain necessary information about the other parties involved in a non-injury accident on private property in which less than $1,500 damage occurred.

3. If my vehicle is towed / impounded, what is the procedure to get it back?

Vehicles are impounded for various reasons under village ordinance. The most common reason is from an arrest of a driver. The arresting officer will issue a form called Notice of Seizure to the driver which informs the driver why the vehicle was seized. A hold is placed on the vehicle until the penalty is paid. After a seizure occurs, the procedure to get it back is for the owner to come to the front desk of the police department and pay $500. The tow company will then be notified that the hold is lifted. The owner will have to go the respective tow company to get their vehicle. The owner is responsible for paying the tow company the towing and storage fee.

4. If my vehicle is impounded, how do I appeal the reason it was impounded?

The owner must file a written request with the Rantoul Police Department within 15 days of receiving notice of impoundment. A hearing is held in front of an administrative hearing officer to determine whether the driver of the owner's vehicle was in violation of village ordinance. If the administrative hearing officer rules in favor of the village, the $500 penalty stands. If the hearing officer rules in favor of the driver, the $500, if paid, is returned to the owner.

6. What are the snow routes in Rantoul?

During a snowfall where an accumulation of two or more inches occur, vehicles may not park or remain parked on designated streets. If vehicles are parked on the designated streets, the Rantoul Police Department has authorization to tow the vehicles at the owners’ expense. After the snowfall has stopped and all snow has been removed from the designated streets, vehicles may again park in these areas. View snow route map.

7. What are the laws in Illinois concerning cell phone use while driving?

Illinois Laws on Cellphone Use While Driving:

• It is illegal to use a cellphone while driving, including reading
or sending text messages.
• Cellphone use is permitted only if using a hands-free device
or Bluetooth® technology.
• Cellphone use is allowed to call 9-1-1, but the driver should
first stop the vehicle and pull off the road.

Violation of these laws may result in a fine and a moving violation
on your driving record.
